WeatherTech states 3.2 mm of multi-layer TPE at 62 Shore A — the only thickness and hardness figures anyone in this category commits to. 3D MAXpider publishes a three-layer build with a stated job for each layer and a 3-year warranty, which is the only warranty term here. A category with almost no numbers in it
Floor mats are sold on the word “durable”, on photographs of mud, and on comparative claims. Actual material specifications are rare enough that publishing one is itself the differentiator.

Two things follow. WeatherTech is the benchmark on material because it is the only one that gave you a figure you could hold it to. And 3D MAXpider is the benchmark on construction, because it is the only one that told you what is actually inside the mat.
What 62 Shore A actually tells you
Shore A is a durometer scale for flexible materials. For reference, a rubber band is around 25, a car tire tread is around 60 to 70, and a shoe heel is around 70. So 62 Shore A is roughly tire-tread firmness: firm enough to hold a molded shape, flexible enough to be pulled out and hosed down.
Combined with 3.2 mm of thickness, that tells you the mat will hold a raised lip rather than flopping — and the raised lip is what actually contains a spilled drink rather than letting it run onto the carpet.
Why the three-layer build matters
3D MAXpider publishes a function for each of its layers, and each one is doing something the others cannot:
- Thermoplastic rubber top. The wearing surface, and the one that has to resist cracking and fading.
- Cross-linked polyethylene core. Closed-cell foam, for shock absorption and — this is the one you notice — sound and thermal insulation. A single-layer mat is a drum; a mat with foam in it is not.
- Fibrous base. Grips factory carpet without hooks, which is what stops the mat creeping toward the pedals.
That middle layer is a genuine functional difference rather than a marketing layer, and it is why these are noticeably quieter underfoot than a single-piece liner.
On Husky's durability claim
Husky publishes that WeatherBeater with its ProGard formula is 78% more durable and 30% cheaper than WeatherTech FloorLiner, sourced to lab testing and published on Husky's own blog.
That is a manufacturer testing itself against a named competitor and publishing the result. It is not fabricated and it is not independent, and both of those things are worth saying. Weighed against it: Husky publishes no thickness and no hardness of its own, so there is nothing to compare against WeatherTech's 3.2 mm and 62 Shore A. A durability claim without a material specification is a claim you cannot check.
The trade that is actually yours to make
Both major makers laser-measure to year, make and model now, so the old argument about fit is mostly settled. What is left is a real material trade:
- Stiffer holds a raised lip better, which contains more liquid. Harder to get in and out.
- More flexible is far easier to pull out, hose down and refit — which is the thing you will do dozens of times a year rather than once.

Husky Liners WeatherBeater
Skip this one. Not because it is bad — it is laser-measured, flexible and cheap. But its headline claim of 78% greater durability is Husky testing Husky against a competitor and publishing the result on its own blog, and it publishes no thickness or hardness of its own to compare. Buy it for the price and the flexibility, not for that number.
Rubberized thermoplastic with Husky's ProGard formula, laser measured to the vehicle like the WeatherTech but more flexible and cheaper. Husky publishes lab-test claims of 78 percent greater durability and 30 percent lower cost against WeatherTech FloorLiner. Those are Husky's own tests on Husky's own blog, which is exactly how much weight to give them.

Questions people actually ask
Are all-weather floor mats worth it?
If you have real winters, children, a dog, or anything muddy, yes: a carpet mat absorbs what an all-weather mat contains. In a dry climate with clean shoes the case is much weaker, and this page works through it.
What does 62 Shore A mean?
A durometer hardness figure. For scale, a rubber band is about 25 and a tire tread is about 60 to 70, so 62 Shore A is roughly tire-tread firmness — stiff enough to hold a molded lip, flexible enough to pull out and hose down.
Do I need vehicle-specific mats?
