Comfort, measured in inches rather than adjectives

What this section covers

A car seat is designed for the average of everybody who might buy that car. You are not the average of everybody. The gap between the two is the whole of this section, and it shows up as a hip angle that is slightly wrong, a lumbar curve the seat does not fill, and a cabin that is 50 degrees hotter than the air outside when you get back to it.

Measure before you buy, and here is what to measure

Every product in this section is chosen on its published dimensions, because those dimensions have to fit a space you can actually measure. Three numbers, all of which take a tape measure and two minutes:

• Seat-to-roof clearance. Sit normally and measure from the seat cushion to the headliner. A 2.8-inch cushion takes 2.8 inches out of that, and in a low car that is the difference between comfortable and hunched.
• Your lumbar gap. Sit back fully, slide a hand behind the small of your back, and estimate the gap. Most car seats leave two to four inches. A support pillow deeper than your gap does not support you, it pushes you forward, which is worse than nothing.
• Your windshield, corner to corner. Sun shades are sold in five or six sizes and the fit is the entire product. A shade with a two-inch gap at the top is a shade that lets the sun onto exactly the part of the dashboard it was bought to protect.

What a seat cushion actually does

It raises the back of your hips relative to the front, which tilts your pelvis forward slightly and reduces the amount of your weight sitting directly on the tailbone. That is it. That is the mechanism, and it is why the useful specification is the thickness and the shape rather than the marketing.

The costs are real too. Lift changes your relationship with the roof, the mirrors, the seatbelt path across your shoulder, and the distance from your feet to the pedals. All four are worth re-checking after fitting one, and the mirrors in particular will be wrong. The cushion page ranks on published geometry, and it says plainly which ones publish a foam density figure — very few do.

The cheapest comfort upgrade is a piece of coated polyester

A windshield shade costs under $25 and is the largest single intervention available on cabin temperature, because the windshield is by far the biggest aperture letting solar energy into a parked car. EcoNour states its shades keep an interior up to 40 F cooler. That is the maker's own figure rather than an independent test, and we say so on the page — but even at half of it, nothing else in this section changes the car by as much for as little.

What we do not do here
