How many watts do you actually need in a car charger?
Most people buy about twice what they need, because the wattage on the box is a total and the number that matters is per port. Here is the two-minute arithmetic, with the ceiling your car imposes.

The short answer
Most people need 30 W on one USB-C port and nothing more. Phones cap between about 20 and 45 W and above the phone's own ceiling extra watts do literally nothing. Add 20 W if you run a Qi2 wireless mount, and 65 W or more only if you charge a laptop. Then check your 12V socket's fuse: a 15-amp circuit supplies about 180 W and that is the real ceiling on everything plugged into it.

The arithmetic, in three steps
- List what actually gets plugged in at the same time. Not what might, one day. What does, on an ordinary Tuesday.
- Take the highest single figure, not the sum. This is where most people go wrong. A charger's per-port ceiling has to cover your biggest device; the total only has to cover the sum, and totals are cheap.
- Check your socket's fuse. Volts times amps. The fuse rating is the ceiling on everything, no matter what the charger claims.

Three worked examples
The ordinary commuter
One phone, running navigation, with the screen bright. Highest single device: 30 W covers it comfortably. Total needed: 30 W.
Buy: a two-port charger with 30 W on USB-C. The Anker 323 publishes exactly that at $19.99. Anything larger is spending money on a number you will never see.
The family car
Two phones and a tablet on a long drive. Highest single device: 30 W. Total: roughly 75 W if all three are drawing their maximum simultaneously, which they rarely are.

The person who works from the car
A laptop plus a phone. Highest single device: 65 W to 100 W. This is the only case on this page where the per-port ceiling is the deciding specification.

The ceiling your car imposes
Your 12V socket is protected by a fuse. Watts equal volts times amps, so:
- 10 A gives about 120 W
- 15 A gives about 180 W
- 20 A gives about 240 W

The complication: on many cars the socket shares its fuse with the radio, the interior lights or a second socket. The available budget is the fuse rating minus whatever else is on the circuit, and your owner's manual has the map.
The cable, which is where the arithmetic usually breaks
A USB-C cable rated for 60 W carries 60W regardless of the charger. Above that, a cable needs an E-marker chip to negotiate higher current.
So the whole chain has to match: charger ceiling, cable rating, device ceiling. The lowest of the three is what you get. Buying a 100W charger and using the cable that came with your phone is the most common way people spend money and change nothing.
Why your phone sometimes loses charge while plugged in
Because navigation with a bright screen, an active GPS radio and a cellular connection can consume power faster than a weak charger supplies it. It is not a fault. It is a budget problem, and it is the clearest sign you are on a 5W USB-A port rather than a USB-C port that can negotiate a higher voltage.
The fix is a charger that speaks USB Power Delivery, on the USB-C port, with a cable that can carry it. Not a longer cable, not a different phone setting.

How many watts do I need to charge a phone in the car?
Thirty watts on a USB-C port is more than any current phone will accept. Phones cap between roughly 20 and 45 W and most sit near the bottom, so a 30 W port charges any of them at full speed.
Is a 100W car charger overkill?
For phones, completely — the phone draws what it asks for and ignores the rest. For a laptop it is the point. The only cost of headroom is money, never risk.
Why does my phone charge slowly in the car?
Usually a USB-A port that cannot negotiate a higher voltage, or a cable rated below the charger, or a hot phone throttling itself. Move to USB-C, check the cable rating, and keep the phone out of direct sun.
Can I overload my car's 12V socket?
The fuse will blow before anything is damaged, which is what it is for. A 15-amp circuit supplies about 180 W, so phone chargers are never the problem. Tire inflators and high-draw accessories are.
