Car charger vs EV charger: which one do you mean?

The phrase covers two products that share almost nothing: a $20 dashboard adapter and a wall unit that needs an electrician. This page sorts out which one you are shopping for and sends you to the right place.

Which one do you mean?

If you want to charge a phone, you want a 12V car charger. A small adapter that plugs into the socket in your dashboard, costs about $20, and delivers somewhere between 20 and 130 watts to USB devices. If you want to charge an electric car, you want EV charging equipment — commonly a Level 2 wall unit at around 7.4 kilowatts, which is roughly a thousand times more power, needs a dedicated circuit and an electrician, and costs hundreds of dollars before installation. This site covers the first one and does not cover the second.

These are two entirely separate product categories that share a common name in ordinary speech.

The power difference is the part worth sitting with. A 130-watt car charger is a large one for its category. A modest home EV charger at 7.4 kilowatts is 7,400 watts — roughly fifty-seven times as much. They are not neighbors on a scale; they are different scales.

If you want the 12V kind

You are in the right place. In brief:

  • Most people need 30 W on one USB-C port and nothing more. Phones cap between about 20 and 45 W. The wattage page does the arithmetic.
  • The number on the box is a total, not a per-port figure. A 67W charger may cap each port at 35W. The charger page compares published per-port tables.
  • Your socket has a fuse, typically 10, 15 or 20 amps, and that is the real ceiling. The 12V page covers it.

If you want the EV kind

This site does not cover it, and rather than pretend otherwise, here is what to search for so you get useful results:

  • “Level 2 home EV charger” rather than “car charger”. The word “Level 2” is what filters out the phone accessories.
  • Your connector standard. J1772 or NACS in North America, and it depends on the car. Getting this wrong is the expensive mistake.
  • Your electrical panel's spare capacity. The install is usually gated by what the panel can take, not by which unit you pick, and that is an electrician's question rather than a shopping one.

The manufacturer of your car is a better starting point than a review site, because connector standard and recommended amperage are car-specific.

If you own an electric car and want the 12V kind too

Then you want both, and everything on this site applies to your car exactly as it does to anyone else's. Electric cars have 12V sockets, 12V batteries and the same phone charging problem as everything else on the road.

One genuine difference is worth flagging. On an EV, the 12V battery is charged from the traction battery on a schedule the manufacturer sets rather than by an alternator, and the behavior when the car is parked varies substantially between models. That matters if you are considering hardwiring a dash cam for parking mode — check your owner's manual for accessory-drain guidance before wiring anything, and do not assume the general advice for combustion cars transfers.

The vocabulary, so the search results behave

  • Car charger — ambiguous, and the reason you are on this page.
  • USB car charger or 12V car charger — the dashboard adapter, unambiguously.
  • Cigarette lighter adapter — the same thing, older phrasing, still the clearest search term.
  • EVSE — the technical term for EV charging equipment. Searching this returns nothing about phones.
  • Level 1, 2 or 3 — EV charging speeds. Level 1 is a household outlet, Level 2 is the wall unit, Level 3 is public DC fast charging.

Adding “USB” or “12V” to a search is the single change that fixes the ambiguity.

Is a car charger the same as an EV charger?

No. A car charger is usually a small adapter for the 12V socket that charges phones, at 20 to 130 watts. An EV charger supplies the car itself, at thousands of watts, and needs a dedicated circuit and usually an electrician.

Can I charge an electric car from a 12V socket?

No. The 12V socket runs the car's accessories and is powered by the car's own 12V system. The traction battery that moves the car is a completely separate system at a much higher voltage.

Do electric cars still have 12V sockets?
