The best car vacuums for pet hair

A bare nozzle slides over dog hair that has worked its way into carpet pile. The only thing that lifts it is a brush with a motor in it, and two of these six do not have one.

By Sawyer V. · Published · How we research

We have not tested any of this. Everything below is compiled from published manufacturer specifications, and the arithmetic is printed so you can check it. This page carries affiliate links: if you buy through one we earn a commission at no extra cost to you, and it does not change the order of the picks. Full disclosure.

The verdict

Buy the BLACK+DECKER furbuster at about $80. It is the only vacuum here that pairs the highest published battery voltage - 20 V MAX - with an anti-tangle motorized brush on rubber bristles, and it publishes a 2-year warranty and a 2.6 lb weight alongside it. The brush is the part that does the work. Prices as of November 7, 2026.

For half that, the furbuster AdvancedClean at about $48 has the same motorized rubber-bristle brush and the same 2-year warranty on a 12 V MAX body. You give up 8 volts and the boost mode. You do not give up the mechanism that matters.

BLACK+DECKER dustbuster furbuster Pet Hair Vacuum (HHVK515JP07)

Pet hair is a brush problem

Everything sold for this is sold on suction, usually in pascals, and for pet hair that is the wrong specification.

Dust and crumbs sit on top of carpet and a vacuum lifts them off. Dog and cat hair does not sit on top of anything. It is barbed, it works its way down between the carpet fibers with every movement of a foot or a paw, and it ends up woven into the pile. Air moving over the surface does not pull it out, which is why you can vacuum a back seat for ten minutes and still see hair when you look at it from the side.

What removes it is mechanical agitation: a brush bar with a motor turning it, with bristles stiff enough to rake into the pile and lift the hair up to where the airflow can take it. That is one feature, it is either present or absent, and it costs money.

Published figures from each maker's listing, read November 7, 2026. Blank cells are figures the maker does not publish.

Four have a driven brush. Two do not. And not one of the six publishes a suction figure in any comparable unit - BLACK+DECKER publishes battery voltage, Bissell publishes battery voltage, and Shark publishes trade names: HyperVelocity on one, two ultra-powerful cyclonic air streams on the other.

The two Shark listings contradict themselves

Worth flagging because both products are otherwise good, and because it is the kind of detail this site checks as a matter of course.

  • Shark Cyclone PET (CH701): the specification field states 1.51 lb and the description states 1.6 lb. Its warranty field reads only Warranty, with no term
  • Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro Plus (CH951): the specification field states 3.09 lb and the description states 2.8 lb. No warranty term published either

Neither discrepancy changes whether the vacuum works. Both are the reason BLACK+DECKER, which publishes a consistent weight and a 2-year term on all three of its vacuums in this ledger, ranks above Shark here.

Who each one is for

  • BLACK+DECKER furbuster (HHVK515JP07) - for a car with a dog in it every week. Anti-tangle motorized brush on rubber bristles, 20 V MAX, POWERBOOST, an XL extendable crevice tool built in, washable pre-filter and filter, 2.6 lb, 2-year warranty. Skip it if the hair is occasional rather than constant - the cheaper furbuster below has the same brush
  • Bissell Pet Hair Eraser 2390A - for the full set of tools. A motorized brush tool described as designed for homes with pets, plus an upholstery tool and a crevice tool, triple-level filtration, 3 lb. Skip it on the numbers: it is ten dollars more than the BLACK+DECKER with a lower published voltage (14 V) and half the warranty term
  • Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro Plus - for the brush that cleans itself. A self-cleaning Pet Power Brush, which is a genuine answer to the one real annoyance of a driven roller: pulling the hair off it afterwards. Three tools, two cyclonic air streams, a hands-free dirt ejector. Skip it if you want a warranty term in writing, because Shark publishes none - and it is the most expensive vacuum on this page
  • BLACK+DECKER furbuster AdvancedClean - for the same brush at half the price. The same push-in motorized rubber-bristle brush, the same published 2-year warranty, on a 12 V MAX body for forty-eight dollars. This is the value pick on the page and the one most people should buy. Skip it if you want POWERBOOST, and note it is actually heavier than the 20 V model at 2.938 lb
  • Shark Cyclone PET (CH701) - for the lightest body, if hair is not the main job. A pound and a half, USB charging, an XL bagless cup and a washable filter for fifty dollars, and genuinely the nicest thing here to hold. Its Multi-Surface Pet Tool is a shaped nozzle, not a motorized roller - so it will take hair off smooth upholstery and leather, and it will slide over hair that is woven into carpet. Skip it if the car has carpeted floors and a dog
  • BLACK+DECKER dustbuster AdvancedClean - no, not for hair. See the skip note above

The order that makes a difference

Two habits do more for a hairy car than upgrading the vacuum, and both are free.

  • Brush before you vacuum, not after. Run the driven brush over the carpet dry first, in two directions, to bring the hair up out of the pile. Then vacuum it. Trying to do both in one pass is why people conclude their vacuum is weak
  • Clear the roller when it stops grabbing. Rubber bristles collect wound hair, and a loaded roller stops agitating. Anti-tangle designs reduce it; the Shark CH951's self-cleaning brush is the only one here that claims to handle it for you

The cheaper answer, though, is to stop the hair reaching the carpet. A seat cover takes the hair instead and goes in the washing machine - best dog seat covers is the page, and a cargo liner does the same job in the back of an SUV. A pet barrier keeps the dog in one section of the car so there is less of it to clean, and best car accessories for dog owners is the whole kit in one place.

If the smell is the other half of the problem, read how to get smells out of your car before you buy an air freshener - the source comes first, and the cabin filter is the part almost nobody checks.

Every pick, with the working

Each entry lists the specifications the maker publishes, the axis scores those specifications produce, and what you give up. Rows that read “Not published” are not omissions on our side: they are things the maker will not commit to in writing, and they cost the product points on the transparency axis. Our pickA motorized brush and the highest published voltage

BLACK+DECKER dustbuster furbuster Pet Hair Vacuum (HHVK515JP07)

8.6/10

The only vacuum on this page that pairs the highest published battery voltage, 20 V MAX, with an anti-tangle motorized brush on rubber bristles - and the brush is the part that gets hair out of car carpet. It publishes a 2-year warranty and a 2.6 lb weight, has a POWERBOOST mode and a washable pre-filter and filter. Eighty dollars, and the only figure it will not give you is suction.

What it gets right

  • Anti-tangle motorized pet brush with rubber bristles - a driven roller, not a passive nozzle
  • 20 V MAX lithium, the highest published voltage on this page
  • 2-year limited warranty, published - two of the five vacuums here publish no term at all
  • POWERBOOST mode, plus an XL extendable crevice tool built in
  • Washable pre-filter and filter, so maintenance is not a consumable
  • 2.6 lb published

Flaws

  • No suction figure in any unit - voltage is not suction, and nobody in this category publishes one that compares
  • Eighty dollars, against forty-eight for the same brush on a 12 V body
  • Rubber bristles need clearing by hand after a thorough car - that is the trade-off for a brush that works
  • Corded charging base, so it has to live somewhere

2Three tools, one of them driven

Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Cordless Hand Vacuum (2390A)

7.7/10

A motorized brush tool built specifically for homes with pets, plus an upholstery tool and a crevice tool, on a 14 V lithium pack with triple-level filtration. Bissell publishes a 1-year warranty and a 3 lb weight. It is ninety dollars, which puts it above the BLACK+DECKER that has a higher published voltage, a longer warranty and the same kind of brush.

  • Three specialized tools in the box: motorized brush, upholstery, crevice

Flaws

  • 14 V lithium, against 20 V MAX on the BLACK+DECKER that costs ten dollars less
  • 1-year warranty, half what BLACK+DECKER publishes
  • No suction figure and no runtime figure published
  • The brush is an attachment rather than the main head, so it is one more thing to carry to the car

3A self-cleaning brush roll, if the price is not the issue

Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro Plus (CH951BR1)

7.8/10

A self-cleaning Pet Power Brush, two cyclonic air streams, a hands-free dirt ejector and three tools, for a hundred dollars. The self-cleaning brush is a genuine answer to the one real complaint about motorized rollers, which is picking hair off them afterwards. What Shark does not publish is a warranty term, and its own listing gives the weight twice with two different numbers: 3.09 lb in the specification field, 2.8 lb in the description.

4The cheapest real motorized pet brush

BLACK+DECKER dustbuster furbuster AdvancedClean (HLVA325JP07)

8.7/10

The same push-in motorized pet brush with rubber bristles as the 20 V furbuster, the same 2-year warranty, on a 12 V MAX body for forty-eight dollars. If the brush is what gets hair out of carpet, this is the cheapest way to own one from a brand that publishes a warranty term. You give up POWERBOOST and 8 volts, and you carry 0.3 lb more.

  • 2-year limited warranty published, at the lowest price of any motorized-brush vacuum here
  • Translucent bagless bowl, washable bowl and filter
  • Extendable crevice tool built in

Flaws

  • 12 V MAX, the lowest published voltage of the three BLACK+DECKER vacuums in this ledger

5The lightest body here, with no driven brush

Shark Cyclone PET Handheld Vacuum (CH701)

8.8/10

A pound and a half, USB charging, an XL bagless cup and a washable filter, for fifty dollars - and a Multi-Surface Pet Tool that is a shaped nozzle, not a motorized roller. HyperVelocity is a name, not a number. For crumbs and the top layer of hair it is excellent and genuinely easy to hold. For hair woven into carpet pile it is the one product on this page without the mechanism that does the job.

What it gets right

  • The lightest vacuum here - 1.51 lb in the specification field
  • USB charging, so it tops up from the same cable as everything else
  • XL bagless dust cup with one-touch emptying, washable filter
  • Two tools included: 8 in crevice tool and a Multi-Surface Pet Tool

Flaws

  • No motorized brush. The pet tool is a shaped nozzle, which slides over hair that is woven in rather than lifting it
  • No warranty term published - the warranty field reads only Warranty
  • The weight is published twice and the figures disagree: 1.51 lb in the specification field, 1.6 lb in the description
  • HyperVelocity suction is a trade name with no figure attached

6No cord, and no socket to occupy

BLACK+DECKER dustbuster AdvancedClean (CHV1410L)

8.6/10

Skip this one. This site's general pick for a car vacuum, and the wrong one for pet hair. The AdvancedClean CHV1410L has a rotating slim nozzle and a flip-up dusting brush, and neither is driven - so on hair that has woven into carpet pile it slides over the top. Buy it for crumbs, sand and footwells; for hair, pay the difference for a motorized brush.

A 16 V MAX lithium handheld with cyclonic action, a washable bagless bowl and a washable filter. It is the opposite trade from a corded car vacuum: you get freedom from the socket and the cord, and you give up unlimited runtime. For a quick tidy rather than a full clean, that is the better trade.

What it gets right

  • Cordless, so nothing is plugged into the 12V socket and no cord is dragged across what you just cleaned
  • Cyclonic action keeps the filter clear, which is what stops suction fading mid-job
  • Bowl and filter are both washable, so the running cost is nothing
  • Rotating slim nozzle turns 180 degrees, which genuinely matters for seat rails

Flaws

  • BLACK+DECKER publishes no runtime figure for this model, which on a battery product is the specification you most want
  • 16 V MAX is the no-load figure; nominal is 14.4 V, and the difference is worth knowing when comparing to other 'MAX' ratings
  • A handheld battery vacuum will not deep-clean a carpet — it tidies

Questions people actually ask

What is the best car vacuum for pet hair?

The BLACK+DECKER furbuster (HHVK515JP07) at about $80, because it has an anti-tangle motorized brush with rubber bristles on the highest published battery voltage here, 20 V MAX, with a published 2-year warranty. The deciding feature is the motorized brush rather than the suction: hair woven into carpet pile has to be agitated loose before any airflow can remove it.

Does suction power matter for pet hair?

Less than the brush does. Airflow removes what is sitting loose; a driven brush is what lifts barbed hair out from between carpet fibers. It is also worth knowing that none of the six vacuums on this page publishes a suction figure in a comparable unit - the pascal numbers on unbranded car vacuums are sealed-suction claims with no stated test method.

Do you need a motorized brush for dog hair in a car?

For carpeted floors and fabric seats, yes - a passive nozzle slides over hair that has worked into the pile. For leather or vinyl, a shaped nozzle is enough, which is why the Shark Cyclone PET with its non-motorized pet tool is still a reasonable buy for some cars. The cheapest motorized option here is the BLACK+DECKER furbuster AdvancedClean at about $48.

How do you get dog hair out of car carpet?

Brush first, vacuum second. Run a driven brush or a stiff rubber brush over the carpet dry, in two directions, to bring the hair up out of the pile, then vacuum it off the surface. Clear the roller when it stops grabbing, because a roller loaded with wound hair stops agitating. Doing both in one pass is why a good vacuum can feel weak.

Is a handheld vacuum enough for a car with a dog?

Yes, if it has a motorized brush. The limits of a handheld are runtime and dust-cup capacity rather than capability - none of these makers publishes a runtime figure, which is worth knowing before you plan to do a whole SUV in one go. The bigger win is prevention: a washable seat cover or cargo liner means most of the hair never reaches the carpet.
