This is not a comparison between two products, because they are not two products. HaloLock is the magnet system; CryoBoost is a cooling feature that some HaloLock chargers have. Here is the version that matters.

They are not competing products. HaloLock is ESR's brand for its magnetic attachment system, used across dozens of products. CryoBoost is a cooling feature — a fan plus heat-dissipating components — fitted to some HaloLock chargers and not others. So the real question is not “HaloLock or CryoBoost”, it is “which HaloLock charger, with or without CryoBoost?” For a car, get the one with CryoBoost: heat is what limits wireless charging in a car, and cooling is the only feature that addresses it.

Why this comparison keeps getting searched

Because ESR's naming makes both words look like product names when only one of them is. A listing reads “HaloLock Qi2 Wireless Car Charger with CryoBoost”, which parses naturally as two things joined by “with”, and the obvious next question is which one you need.

You need both, because they are not alternatives. Here is the actual hierarchy.

HaloLock: the magnet system

ESR's brand name for its magnetic attachment. It appears on car mounts, desk stands, power banks, wallets, tripods and charging stations. If a product says HaloLock, it means magnets that align with an iPhone's MagSafe ring or a Qi2 magnet array.

Every ESR magnetic product is a HaloLock product. It tells you the phone will snap on aligned. It tells you nothing about charging speed, cooling, or whether the thing charges at all — plenty of HaloLock products are holders with no electronics in them.

CryoBoost: the cooling feature

A fan plus heat-dissipating components built into some HaloLock chargers. It is an option on a subset of the line, not a separate product family and not an alternative to HaloLock.

Its job is narrow and genuinely useful: keep the phone cool enough that it does not throttle its own charging. That is the actual limiting factor for wireless charging in a car, and it is the one nobody addresses.

Why cooling matters more than the wattage number

Wireless charging is inefficient, and the inefficiency becomes heat in both the coil and the phone. Put that phone on a dashboard in summer, running navigation with the screen at full brightness, and it is already warm before charging begins.

Phones defend themselves by throttling charge rate as internal temperature rises. So the practical sequence on a hot day is: full rated speed for a few minutes, then progressively less, then very little. The mount is doing its job the whole time; the phone is refusing the power.

Active cooling attacks that directly. It does not make the charger more powerful — the ceiling is still 15 W — it makes the phone willing to accept the power for longer. In a car that is the difference that shows up on the battery percentage.

The requirement both versions share

ESR publishes it plainly: a USB-C source of 20 W or more is needed for the mount to deliver its rated output. That is more than most factory USB ports supply and more than a bare 12V socket supplies, which is nothing.

So a HaloLock car charger of any description is a two-part purchase unless you already have a capable car charger. Add one from the charger page, or buy a mount that includes a supply — Belkin's does, which is on this page for exactly that contrast.

The version of this decision worth considering

Belkin's BoostCharge Pro takes the opposite approach: same Qi2 15 W, no active cooling, and everything you need in one box including a 20 W USB-C car supply, a five-foot tethered cable and a two-year warranty.

The trade is clean. ESR sells you the feature that addresses the physics and expects you to solve the power supply. Belkin sells you a complete system and does not address the heat. At $39.99 against $71.99, and given that most people already own a car charger or should, the ESR is the better buy for most — but if you want to open one box and be finished, Belkin is a legitimate answer.

Questions people actually ask

Is CryoBoost a different product from HaloLock?

No. HaloLock is ESR's magnetic attachment system and appears across its whole range. CryoBoost is a cooling feature fitted to some HaloLock chargers. A CryoBoost charger is a HaloLock charger.

Do I need CryoBoost?

In a car, yes, if you want sustained charging in warm weather. Heat is what makes a phone throttle its own charging, and cooling is the only feature that addresses it. In a cool climate or on short drives it matters much less.

Does the fan make noise?

There is a fan in your car and you can hear it when the stereo is off. That is a real trade rather than a footnote, and it is the main reason somebody might reasonably pick a mount without cooling.

What power supply does it need?

ESR publishes a requirement of a USB-C source of 20W or more. Factory USB ports are usually below that, so plan on adding a car charger unless the mount includes one.
