The short answer
Qi2 is an open standard from the Wireless Power Consortium; MagSafe is Apple's proprietary system. Qi2 borrowed the magnetic alignment idea and published it as the Magnetic Power Profile, at 15W, with a certification program behind it. In practice a Qi2-certified car charger works at full speed on a modern iPhone and on Qi2 Android phones, while an uncertified magnetic charger may do neither. Certification is the thing you are buying.

What actually differs
MagSafe is Apple's, introduced on the iPhone 12: a ring of magnets around the charging coil so the charger aligns itself, at 15W on supported hardware.
Qi2 is the Wireless Power Consortium's standard, released in 2023. It took the same magnetic alignment concept and published it as the Magnetic Power Profile, available to any manufacturer, at the same 15W — with an interoperability and safety certification program attached.
The WPC states Qi2 reached over 1.5 billion devices in its first year in market, and that Qi2 25W launched in 2025 delivering nearly 70% more charging power, with some certified chargers taking a phone from 0 to 50% in thirty minutes.
Why the certification is the product
There is a third category that dominates the shelves and gets confused with both: the generic magnetic wireless charger. It has magnets, it holds an iPhone, and it is neither MagSafe nor Qi2 certified.
Certification is what closes that gap. The WPC maintains a public product database of Qi certified devices, which makes the claim checkable rather than trusted — an unusual thing to be able to say in car accessories.

The Android side, which is the real change
For iPhone owners Qi2 mostly means "MagSafe, from more brands, cheaper". For Android it is a genuine capability that did not exist.
Qi2 brought magnetic alignment to the Android ecosystem, and Belkin publishes support for Samsung's S25 series and newer — with the caveat that matters: you need a magnetic Qi2 or MagSafe-compatible case. Most Android phones do not have magnets built into the body, so the magnets live in the case.
That is a second purchase and a real constraint. An Android phone in a plain case will not attach to any magnetic mount at all, which is a different failure from charging slowly — magnetic vs clamp car mounts covers the plate-versus-case decision.
Fifteen watts in a hot car
Wireless charging is less efficient than a cable, and the lost energy leaves as heat, in the hottest environment your phone regularly occupies. A parked car reaches roughly 60-70 C inside in summer.
Phones protect themselves by throttling charge rate as they warm. The practical result is that sustained 15W in a hot car is optimistic — the charger is rated for it, and the phone decides. On a windshield-mounted phone in direct sun running navigation, charging can slow to barely keeping up with the screen.
Two mitigations exist. Mount somewhere out of direct sun, which is usually a vent rather than a windshield. Or buy a mount with active cooling, which is exactly what ESR's CryoBoost does and the reason it exists — ESR HaloLock vs CryoBoost.
The honest comparison nobody makes
Qi2 at 15W against a USB-C cable is not close, and this page would be dishonest not to say so.
A modern phone on a decent USB-C PD car charger takes far more than 15W and produces less waste heat doing it. The cable costs a fraction of a Qi2 mount. If the goal is a full battery by the end of a commute, wired wins on every measure except one.
That one is real, though: you do not plug anything in. Over a few hundred short trips, not handling a connector is the difference between a phone that is always charged and one that is often not, because the cable step is the step people skip. Whether that is worth the price and the heat is a personal call rather than a technical one.

What to check before buying
- Look for "Qi2 certified", not "Qi2 compatible". The second phrase is not a certification and means nothing
- Check the power supply is included. A Qi2 mount needs a car charger capable of feeding it, and many are sold without one — which is a hidden cost and a reason the apparently pricier bundles are not always pricier
- Android: confirm your phone or case has magnets. Without them the mount will not attach at all

2Charging a laptop in the car
Anker 535 Car Charger (67W)
Skip this one. A wired charger on a page about wireless, and on it deliberately. Qi2 tops out at 15W; a USB-C cable into the same phone delivers considerably more, generates less heat doing it, and costs a fraction as much. If your actual complaint is that the phone charges slowly on a commute, wireless is the wrong direction to solve it in.
Same three ports and same 67W total as the 335, but one USB-C port will deliver the whole 67W on its own at 20V and 3.35A. That is a real laptop charge rather than a trickle, and it is the only reason to pay more than the 335 costs. If nothing you own draws more than 35W, this is money spent on a number you will never see.

Is Qi2 the same as MagSafe?
No. MagSafe is Apple's proprietary system; Qi2 is the Wireless Power Consortium's open standard, which adopted magnetic alignment as its Magnetic Power Profile at the same 15W. Qi2 works across brands and has a public certification database behind it.
Will a Qi2 charger work on my Android phone?
