The best flashlights to keep in a car

The argument is not that a flashlight is better than your phone. It is that your phone is the thing you call for help with, and pointing it at a wheel nut for twenty minutes is the wrong use of a finite battery.

The short answer

Buy the Anker Bolder LC90. It publishes all three numbers that matter and almost nobody in this category publishes even two: 900 lumens, up to 6 hours of runtime, and an IPX5 ingress rating — which is rain resistance, and a breakdown happens in the rain often enough for that to be the point. It is rechargeable with an 18650 cell included, so there is no scramble for AAs, and it has SOS and strobe modes, which are exactly the modes a roadside light needs.

Why not just use your phone

You can, and for thirty seconds it is fine. The problem is the situations where you actually need light in a car:

  • You are broken down at night. Your phone is how you call for recovery, how you tell someone where you are, and how you wait. Its battery is the resource you are protecting, not spending.
  • You need both hands. Changing a wheel, checking under the hood, reconnecting a battery. A phone has to be propped somewhere and it always points at the wrong thing.
  • It is raining. Your phone is probably rated for it and you are still not going to want it out in it.
  • You need to be seen. A phone torch cannot strobe usefully. Being visible on a shoulder at night is a genuine safety function.

Published figures. Lumens is the number that gets marketed; runtime is the one that decides whether the light is still on when help arrives.

Lumens is the headline and it is the least useful of the three on its own. A very bright light with a 40-minute runtime is worse for this job than a moderate one that lasts, and brightness modes trade directly against duration — 900 lumens on high and 6 hours of runtime are not the same setting.

What IPX5 actually means

The IP scale has two digits: solids then liquids. An X means the maker did not test that one. So IPX5 is “dust ingress not rated, water jets from any direction do not cause harmful effects”.

In practice that is rain and splashes, which covers the roadside case. It is explicitly not submersion — dropping it in a puddle is a different rating, and IPX5 does not promise it survives.

Almost nothing else in the car-flashlight aisle publishes an IP rating at all, and a light that has not been rated for water is a light nobody has checked.

Rechargeable or disposable

Rechargeable wins on cost and on not discovering the AAs corroded in the battery compartment. It loses on the self-discharge problem above.

The genuine argument for disposable cells in a car is that lithium primary batteries (not the rechargeable kind) hold charge for years and tolerate heat and cold better than almost anything else. If you are the sort of person who will genuinely never charge anything, a light taking lithium AAs is the more honest purchase.

For everyone else: rechargeable, plus the twice-a-year reminder.

You may already own a light

Two things in a well-stocked trunk have a light built in, and it is worth knowing before buying a third:

  • The jump starter. NOCO publishes a 100-lumen light on the GB40. That is not a work light, and it is enough to see terminals and clamps — which is precisely when you need it.
  • The tire gauge. The heavy-duty AstroAI publishes a built-in flashlight, which sounds like a gimmick until you are checking a valve stem in the dark, which is when you always check valve stems.

If your needs are “see a valve stem” and “see a battery terminal”, those two cover it. A dedicated light is for changing a wheel, working under the hood, and being visible.

Where to keep it

In the cabin, not the trunk — glovebox or door pocket. The trunk is the wrong place for the thing you need in order to safely get to the trunk at night on a shoulder.

Why not just use my phone as a flashlight?

Because your phone is how you call for help and tell someone where you are. Spending its battery on lighting a wheel change is the wrong use of a finite resource, and a phone cannot strobe to make you visible.

How many lumens do I need?
