It is built for Android Auto specifically rather than being a CarPlay product with Android added, it publishes a 115 ms latency figure — the only one anyone in this category states — and its multifunction button switches between paired phones without opening a settings menu, which is the feature that matters in a shared car. $65, and it needs Android 11 or higher. The absolute prerequisite applies as always: your car must already have factory wired Android Auto.

The trap: half of these are CarPlay only
This is the most common way people waste money in this category. The listings look identical, the photographs look identical, and the platform support is buried.

Latency, and why one published figure stands out
Wireless projection introduces a delay between your phone and the screen. It shows up as touch response lag and as a gap between the map moving and the audio prompt.
AAWireless publishes 115 ms. Nobody else in this category publishes a latency figure at all, which is the reason it is worth pointing at: it is a checkable claim in a category of adjectives.
For context, 115 ms is roughly a tenth of a second — genuinely imperceptible during turn-by-turn navigation, and just about noticeable if you are dragging a map around, which you should not be doing while driving anyway.
The multifunction button is the sleeper feature
AAWireless publishes a physical button that switches between paired phones, pauses the connection, or restarts pairing.
That sounds minor and it is the single most useful differentiator on this page for a two-driver household. Every other adapter here handles a second phone by forgetting the first, or by requiring a phone-side settings dance while sitting in the driveway. A button on the dongle is a materially better answer.
It also solves the case where you want Android Auto off — a passenger controlling music from their own phone, say — without unplugging anything.
The handshake, which is the real complaint
Every adapter in this category has the same fundamental behavior: at each start, Bluetooth pairs first, then a Wi-Fi link comes up, then the session begins. That takes a few seconds.
It is shorter than getting the cable out and plugging it in, and it is not instant, and it happens at exactly the moment you want to reverse off the drive. It is the thing people complain about, and no adapter eliminates it — the latency figure above is about the connection once established, not about how long establishing it takes.
If a few seconds of waiting would irritate you more than a cable does, keep the cable. That is a legitimate answer and the wired-versus-wireless comparison makes the case properly.
Check your Android version
AAWireless publishes a floor of Android 11 or higher. That is a hard requirement rather than a recommendation, and it is worth checking on a phone you have been holding onto — an older device that never took the update simply will not work.
This is the second most common cause of a returned adapter, after buying a CarPlay-only unit by mistake.
Power draw and the port you lose
CarlinKit publishes 0.75 W for the 5.0, which is small enough that a permanently connected dongle is not a parasitic-drain concern even in a car whose USB port stays live with the ignition off.
The real cost is the port itself. The adapter occupies the data USB port permanently, and on a car with one port that means charging has to come from the 12V socket instead. That is not a bad outcome — a proper USB-C car charger is faster than most factory ports anyway, and if you have a recent Samsung it is the only way to get PPS charging at all.
