The best car chargers for Android phones

One specification separates a charger that hits your phone's advertised speed from one that merely charges it, and it is not wattage. Samsung's fast charging needs PPS, and plenty of chargers do not have it.

The short answer

Look for PPS by name, not wattage. Several Samsung phones reach their advertised charging speed only over Programmable Power Supply, an extension of USB Power Delivery that adjusts voltage in fine steps rather than fixed jumps. A charger without it still charges your phone — just not at the number on the box. The Anker 335 publishes PD and PPS explicitly and caps at 35 W per port, which is above what any Android phone will draw. The UGREEN 130 W also publishes PPS and adds a 100 W port and an E-marked cable if a laptop shares the car.

What PPS actually is

Standard USB Power Delivery negotiates in fixed steps: 5 V, 9 V, 12 V, 15 V, 20 V. The phone asks for one of those, the charger supplies it, and the phone's internal circuitry drops it to whatever the battery needs — losing some of it as heat on the way.

PPS lets the charger supply an arbitrary voltage in small increments, so it can deliver almost exactly what the battery wants. Less conversion inside the phone means less heat, and less heat means the phone throttles later. That is the whole mechanism, and it is why the phone charges faster rather than just differently.

The practical consequence: a Samsung that advertises 45 W Super Fast Charging 2.0 reaches that number over PPS and falls back to a slower fixed-voltage rate without it. The difference is real and it is invisible on the box.

If you do not own a recent Samsung, PPS is a specification you can safely ignore — and the cheapest charger with a published output table is the right buy. The wattage page works through what your devices actually accept.

Do not charge an Android from the USB-A port

Every multi-port charger on this site includes a USB-A port, and on all of them it is the slow one — 22.5 W maximum on the Anker units, 22.5 W or 18 W on the UGREEN depending on protocol.

More importantly, USB-A cannot negotiate the higher voltages that PD and PPS use. Plugging a Samsung into the USB-A port of a 130 W charger gets you a fraction of what the charger can do, and the charger is not at fault. Phones go on USB-C; USB-A is for dash cam cables and older accessories.

How much wattage an Android phone actually takes

Less than the chargers advertise, in every case:

  • Most Android phones cap between 20 W and 30 W. A 30 W port covers them entirely.
  • Fast-charging flagships reach 45 W, and only over PPS.
  • Nothing with a phone battery draws more than 45 W. Above that, extra watts are for laptops or for nothing.

So the Anker 323 at 30 W is enough for most Android phones, and the 335 at 35 W per port with published PPS is enough for all of them while still having two more ports.

Heat is the ceiling PPS is trying to raise

A phone charging in a car in summer is fighting on two fronts: the charge itself generates heat, and the cabin is already hot. Phones protect their batteries by throttling charge rate as internal temperature rises, and a throttled 45 W charge is a 15 W charge.

That is the real-world reason PPS matters more than its efficiency numbers suggest: less conversion heat inside the phone means it reaches the throttling threshold later. It is also why a phone in direct sun on a dashboard charges badly no matter what you plug it into, and why wireless charging in a hot car is a thermal problem before it is a power problem.

What to actually buy

  • Recent Samsung, one phone: the Anker 335. PPS published, 35 W per port, three ports.
  • Any other Android, one phone: the Anker 323 at 30 W. Cheaper, smaller, and you will never see the difference.
  • A laptop shares the car: the UGREEN 130 W. PPS published, 100 W on one port, E-marked cable included.

Anker 535 Car Charger (67W)

Skip this one. Anker publishes PowerIQ 3.0 with PD for the 535 and does not state PPS by name, where it does state PPS explicitly for the 335. On a page about the one protocol that matters for Android fast charging, the charger that does not name it is the wrong recommendation — even though it is the more powerful unit.

Same three ports and same 67W total as the 335, but one USB-C port will deliver the whole 67W on its own at 20V and 3.35A. That is a real laptop charge rather than a trickle, and it is the only reason to pay more than the 335 costs. If nothing you own draws more than 35W, this is money spent on a number you will never see.

What is PPS and does my phone need it?

Programmable Power Supply — an extension of USB Power Delivery that adjusts voltage in fine steps rather than fixed jumps, producing less heat inside the phone. Several recent Samsung phones need it to reach their advertised charging speed. Most other Android phones do not.

Why is my Samsung not fast charging in the car?

Three usual causes, in order: you are on the USB-A port, which cannot negotiate the higher voltages; the charger does not support PPS; or the cable lacks an E-marker. Check them in that order.

Is a 130W charger overkill for an Android phone?

Completely — nothing with a phone battery draws more than about 45 W, and the phone ignores the rest. It is only worth it if a laptop also charges in the car.

Can I use the USB-A port for my phone?

You can, and it will be slow. USB-A tops out around 22.5 W on these chargers and cannot negotiate PD or PPS voltages at all. Keep USB-A for dash cam cables and older accessories.
