Two companies solving the same problem from opposite ends. VIOFO sells specifications; Garmin sells a supported product. The published numbers make the trade unusually clear.

The decision

Buy VIOFO if you want the best hardware per dollar and are comfortable with a phone app. The A119 Mini 2 has a Sony STARVIS 2 sensor, an f/1.6 lens, 2K at 60fps, a published 65 C ceiling and an 18-month warranty — for less than Garmin's current 1080p camera. Buy Garmin if you want a product rather than a component: a real owner's manual with actual specifications in it, an app the company will still maintain in five years, voice control that works, and a support line. You are paying roughly double per pixel for that, and for some people it is the right purchase.

Two companies, two completely different products

VIOFO is a specification company. Its product pages read like datasheets: sensor part numbers, aperture, operating and storage temperature ranges, named parking modes, warranty terms. The camera is aimed at somebody who wants to know what is inside it.

Garmin is a product company. Its cameras have fewer megapixels, cost more, and come with an owner's manual containing an actual specifications table — input voltage, operating range, charging range, wireless frequencies — plus an app that has been maintained for years and will continue to be.

Neither is the wrong answer. They are answers to different questions, and the useful thing is to work out which question you are asking.

Where VIOFO clearly wins

  • Hardware per dollar, and it is not close. A STARVIS 2 sensor at f/1.6 and 2K 60fps, against 1080p at 30fps, for forty dollars less than the Garmin X110.
  • Frame rate. 60fps halves the motion blur on a plate moving relative to you, which is the specific job a dash cam exists to do.
  • A published heat ceiling. 65 C in writing, on a page anyone can check. Neither current Garmin publishes one.
  • Warranty. Eighteen months against twelve.
  • Parking mode depth. Three named modes and a hardwire kit with four selectable cutoff voltages, documented on VIOFO's own support site.

Where Garmin clearly wins

  • Documentation. Garmin publishes a real owner's manual with a specifications table. That is where the -20 to 60 C range and the 4.75 to 5.25 Vdc input rating on the older Dash Cam 57 come from, and it is more than most of this category publishes anywhere.
  • Software longevity. Garmin maintains apps for years after a product ships. If your relationship with the camera is through a phone app, whose app it is matters a great deal in year three.
  • Voice control that is actually used. It is the only genuinely safe way to lock a clip while driving, and Garmin's implementation is the one people actually keep enabled.
  • The polarizer on the X110. A built-in Clarity polarizer addresses windshield reflection at the lens. Reflection ruins more daytime footage than resolution ever fixes, and no VIOFO here includes one.
  • Support. There is a phone number, and someone answers it.

The question that actually decides it

Do you want to interact with this camera, or forget it exists?

If you will genuinely open the app, review clips, adjust settings and update firmware, buy the VIOFO. The hardware is better, the specifications are published, and you will be using the parts that make it good.

If you want to fit it once and never think about it until something happens, buy the Garmin. You are paying for a company that will still support the thing in five years, and that is a real product attribute even though it never appears on a spec sheet.

What neither of them solves

Both need a hardwire kit for parking mode. Both need an endurance card you buy separately. Both are adhesive-mounted, and both will droop eventually in a hot climate if you mount them out in open glass rather than tucked behind the mirror.

And neither of them publishes a parking-mode current draw, which is the number that would actually let you calculate your own battery arithmetic without borrowing figures from a third party. That gap is the subject of the battery page.

Is VIOFO a reputable brand?

It publishes sensor part numbers, apertures, operating and storage temperature ranges, named parking modes and an 18-month warranty, and it runs a support site with real technical documentation. On the checkable measures it does considerably better than most of this category, including brands with more recognition.

Is Garmin worth the premium?

For the hardware, no. For an owner's manual with a real specifications table, an app maintained for years and a support line, it is a genuine product difference that no spec comparison captures. Whether that is worth roughly double per pixel depends entirely on how you intend to use the camera.

Which is better in a hot climate?
