Buy the ESR HaloLock CryoBoost. It is the only mount here that treats heat as the actual engineering problem rather than a footnote — an active fan and a heat sink exist specifically because wireless charging in a sunlit car throttles. If you want the cleanest Qi2 implementation without a fan, the Belkin BoostCharge Pro is the alternative. Either way, understand the trade: wireless charging in a car is slower and hotter than a cable, and a hot phone charges slower still.

What you are actually buying
The appeal is not speed. A cable will always charge faster. The appeal is that you put the phone on the mount with one hand and it is charging, and you take it off and it is not — no connector, no fumbling for a port in the dark, no cable that has to reach.
For a commuter making two short trips a day that is genuinely worth something, because the alternative is a phone that arrives at both ends of the day slightly emptier than it left. For someone doing a five-hour drive with navigation running, wireless charging may not even keep pace with the drain.
Why a 15W mount charges at 7.5W
This is the single most common disappointment in the category, and it has three separate causes that stack.
- The phone decides. iPhones without MagSafe alignment fall back to standard Qi speeds. The mount's headline figure is what it can deliver, not what your phone will accept
- The car has to supply it. A 15W charging mount needs meaningfully more than 15W at the input, because wireless transfer is lossy. Plug it into an old 5W USB port in the console and it will do what that port allows
- Heat throttles it. Phones reduce charging current as they warm, and wireless charging warms them by design. In a car in summer this is not an edge case, it is Tuesday
Heat is the real constraint
Wireless charging works by inducing current in a coil, and the losses in that process come out as heat on both sides. Add a phone in direct sun behind glass, add a processor running turn-by-turn navigation, and you have three heat sources stacked on one device.
Phones respond by throttling: first the charge current, then the screen brightness, and eventually the processor. The failure mode people actually experience is a phone that gets hot, dims the screen mid-navigation, and charges more slowly than it discharges.

Magnetic alignment is what makes it work
Standard Qi requires the coils to line up, and a phone dropped roughly onto a flat pad in a moving car does not line up. The result is the failure everyone recognizes: you arrive and the phone did not charge, because it shifted an inch on the first corner.
Magnetic alignment — MagSafe on iPhones, Qi2 as the open standard that adopted the same magnet ring — fixes this by making misalignment physically difficult. For a car mount this is not a convenience feature, it is the feature that makes wireless charging viable at all.
If your phone has no magnets, a case with a magnet ring is the cheap fix. If you use a thick case, check the thickness the mount publishes — magnets weaken quickly with distance, and a rugged case can put the phone outside the working range.
Where to mount it, given the heat
The vent argument gets stronger when charging is involved. A vent mount sits in moving air, and in summer that air is cooled — which directly counteracts the one thing limiting your charge rate. A dashboard mount in the sun is the opposite.

When a cable is the better answer
Buy a cable and a non-charging mount if any of these apply: you drive long distances with navigation running, you park in the sun without a shade, your phone has no magnets and you do not want a new case, or you already have a good 12V charger and a spare port.
A wired setup at 20W or more will out-charge any wireless mount in this group, cost less, and generate less heat in the phone. The convenience is real — it is just not free, and the category consistently pretends that it is.

Questions people actually ask
Does wireless charging damage my phone battery?
The mechanism people worry about is heat, and heat does age lithium cells faster. That is an argument for keeping the phone cool — shade, vent airflow, a mount that manages heat — rather than an argument that wireless charging is inherently harmful. We are describing the physics, not making a warranty claim.
Will a Qi2 mount work with my iPhone?
Qi2 adopted the same magnet ring geometry as MagSafe, so a Qi2 mount aligns with a MagSafe iPhone. What speed you get depends on the phone and the supply, and it is not always the mount's headline figure.
Can I use a wireless charging mount with a thick case?
Up to a point. Magnetic strength drops off sharply with distance and so does charging efficiency. Check the case thickness the mount publishes; a case with a built-in magnet ring is generally better than a thick case without one.
Why does my phone stop charging on hot days?
