How to fix CarPlay connection problems
For wired CarPlay the cable is the answer most of the time. For wireless it is almost always the Wi-Fi handoff, and the two need entirely different troubleshooting.

The short version
Wired: replace the cable. Wireless: forget the car and re-pair. Those two steps resolve the large majority of CarPlay problems. A charge-only cable looks identical to a data cable, and a worn cable fails intermittently in a way that reads as a software fault. For wireless, the handoff from Bluetooth to Wi-Fi is where it breaks, and a stale pairing record is the usual culprit. Check your phone's port for lint before assuming anything else.

Wired and wireless fail differently
These are separate systems with separate failure modes, and troubleshooting one with the other's steps wastes time.
Wired CarPlay is a data connection over USB. It fails at the cable, the port, or the phone's connector — physical things.
Wireless CarPlay establishes over Bluetooth and then hands off to a dedicated Wi-Fi link that carries the actual session. It fails at the pairing, the handoff, or radio interference — none of which are physical.
The cable, which is the answer most of the time
Wired CarPlay needs a data cable. A large proportion of cables sold — particularly ones bundled with other products or bought on price — are charge-only, carrying power but not data. There is no visible difference and no marking.
Cables also fail progressively rather than suddenly. The strain point just behind the connector flexes every time you plug in, and a partly-broken data conductor will still charge while failing to carry data — which presents as CarPlay that connects sometimes, or disconnects over bumps.

- If it works, the old cable was the problem, however new it looks
- Keep the good cable in the car permanently rather than moving it around
- Wiggling the cable and seeing the connection change means the cable is finished
Two ports worth checking
The car's port. Many vehicles have several USB ports and only one supports CarPlay — the others are charge-only or media-only. The CarPlay port is often marked with a phone or CarPlay icon, and it is frequently not the most convenient one.
The phone's port. Pocket lint compacts into a solid pad at the bottom of a charging port over months, and the connector then cannot seat fully. That produces intermittent connections, or a cable that only works at one particular angle.

It is remarkable how often this is the whole problem, and how rarely anyone checks before assuming a software fault. The same check appears in why your phone charges slowly in the car for the same reason.
Wireless failures, which are all about the handoff
Wireless CarPlay uses Bluetooth to discover and negotiate, then hands the session to a dedicated Wi-Fi connection between phone and head unit. Almost all wireless failures happen at or after that handoff.
The distinctive symptom is a connection that starts and then drops within seconds, or one that connects for audio but never shows the interface. That is Bluetooth succeeding and Wi-Fi failing.
- Forget the car on both sides. Remove it from the phone's CarPlay list and its Bluetooth list — they are separate entries and people clear only one
- Turn the phone's hotspot off. A phone transmitting Wi-Fi as a hotspot is being asked to hold a separate Wi-Fi link to the car at the same time
- Check for a competing phone. A passenger's paired phone may claim the connection first
- Restart the head unit. Many cars allow a long press on the power button; otherwise an ignition cycle with the car locked for a minute

If you are using a wireless adapter
A wireless CarPlay adapter bridges your car's wired CarPlay to a wireless connection, which adds a device and therefore a failure point.
Adapters generally have their own firmware and their own configuration interface, usually reached by connecting to the adapter's Wi-Fi from a phone. Firmware updates for these are frequent and they matter — the category moves quickly and updates fix real compatibility problems.
Two adapter-specific things to check. The adapter's own USB connection to the car is a cable connection subject to everything above. And several adapters in this category are CarPlay only, including the Ottocast U2-AIR Pro and the CarlinKit 3.0 — if you have switched to an Android phone, that is your answer.

The one nobody suspects
Wireless adapters live in a car permanently and generate their own heat while running a Wi-Fi radio continuously. Ottocast publishes a 75 C working ceiling for the U2-AIR Pro — the highest figure on this site — which is genuinely useful because a parked car reaches roughly 60-70 C.
An adapter that works fine in spring and drops connections in July is very likely thermal. Moving it out of direct sun, or into the glovebox rather than on the dash, is worth trying before replacing it.

Before you conclude it is broken
Two final checks. Confirm CarPlay is enabled in the phone's settings — screen time restrictions can disable it and it looks exactly like a fault. And update both phone and head unit: OS updates change CarPlay behavior regularly, and manufacturers publish head unit firmware that almost nobody applies.
