Why your car Bluetooth keeps disconnecting
Six causes, checked in order from most to least likely. The first two account for most of it, and neither requires buying anything.

The short version
Clear the paired device list and re-pair. That fixes more Bluetooth dropouts than everything else combined, because most car systems hold a limited number of pairings and behave badly once the list is full or a record has become corrupted. After that, check whether a second device — a passenger's phone, a smartwatch — is competing for the connection, and on Android check battery optimization, which can suspend the very process holding the link open.

The paired device list, which nobody clears
Car Bluetooth systems store a limited number of paired devices — often five to ten. Over years of ownership, every phone that has ever connected accumulates in that list: old phones, passengers' phones, a phone you replaced two years ago.
When the list fills, behavior becomes unpredictable. Some systems refuse new pairings, some silently drop the oldest, and some develop intermittent connection problems with the device you actually use. None of them tells you the list is the problem.
Pairing records can also become corrupted, particularly after a phone OS update changes how Bluetooth negotiates. A corrupted record produces a connection that works and then does not, with no pattern you can see.

A second device stealing the connection
Most car systems and adapters support multipoint — connecting to two devices at once. Anker publishes two simultaneous connections for the Soundsync, Besign for the BK01, and Jabra remembers eight devices with two connected.
Multipoint is genuinely useful and it is also the second most common cause of mystery dropouts. If a passenger's phone is paired from a previous trip, it may reconnect the moment they get in and take a connection slot — and depending on the system, that can bump yours.
Smartwatches are the version nobody suspects. A watch paired to the car, or competing for the phone's own Bluetooth radio, produces exactly this pattern.
The test is quick: turn Bluetooth off on every other device in the car and see whether the problem stops. If it does, remove the competing pairings rather than living with it.
Battery optimization, on Android specifically
Android's battery management can suspend background processes aggressively, and on some devices that includes the process maintaining a Bluetooth audio link or handling reconnection.
The symptom is distinctive: the connection works while you are actively using the phone and drops when the screen has been off for a while, or fails to reconnect automatically when you get in the car.
The fix is to set the relevant app — the music app, or the adapter's companion app if it has one — to unrestricted battery usage. Manufacturer skins vary in where this setting lives, and some are considerably more aggressive than stock Android about ignoring it.
Interference, and where the phone is sitting
Bluetooth operates in the 2.4 GHz band, shared with Wi-Fi, wireless chargers and a great deal of other equipment. A car concentrates several of those in a very small space.

Moving the phone to a mount in open air resolves a surprising number of these, and it is better practice anyway — a phone in a mount is a phone you are not reaching for.
If you are using an adapter rather than factory Bluetooth
Two adapter-specific causes worth ruling out.
Battery level. A battery-powered adapter running low will often disconnect before it fully dies, producing a dropout that looks like a pairing problem. The Anker Soundsync publishes 12 hours of playback on a 180 mAh cell — enough for a while, not enough to forget about. A socket-powered unit such as the Besign has no such failure mode.
Temperature. Anker publishes an operating range of -10 C to 55 C for the Soundsync, which is the lowest ceiling of any device on this site — and a parked car reaches roughly 60-70 C. A device that has been sitting above its published ceiling behaving oddly is not mysterious.

Firmware, on both ends
Phone OS updates change Bluetooth behavior regularly, and a car head unit designed years ago was tested against a phone OS that no longer exists. That mismatch is a genuine and under-appreciated source of new problems appearing on a setup that worked fine for years.
Many manufacturers publish head unit firmware updates and almost nobody applies them. It is worth checking your manufacturer's owner site — the update is often free and sometimes addresses exactly this.
If a problem appeared immediately after a phone update and nothing else changed, that is your cause, and re-pairing from scratch is the first thing to try.
When to stop troubleshooting
If the car's own Bluetooth is old, unreliable and unsupported, an adapter can sidestep it entirely. Feeding a modern Bluetooth receiver into the aux input bypasses the car's Bluetooth stack completely, and a modern radio in a cheap adapter frequently outperforms a decade-old factory implementation.

Skip this one. If your car has no aux socket this does nothing at all — check for the 3.5 mm jack before you buy, not after. An FM transmitter is the fallback for a car without one.

Why does my phone disconnect from the car every few minutes?
Most often a full or corrupted paired device list, or a second device competing for the connection. Clear both sides of the pairing and re-pair, then test with every other Bluetooth device in the car switched off.
Why does it work fine until the screen goes off?
On Android, that pattern points at battery optimization suspending the process holding the link. Set the relevant app to unrestricted battery usage — the setting's location varies by manufacturer.
Can a wireless charger interfere with Bluetooth?
