The best radar detectors
An entire category sold on range, in which no manufacturer publishes a range. What you can compare instead is how well each one ignores things that are not police radar.

We have not tested any of this. Everything below is compiled from published manufacturer specifications, and the arithmetic is printed so you can check it. The short answer
Check the law where you drive first, then ignore the range claims. Radar detectors are prohibited in Virginia under Code § 46.2-1079 and in the District of Columbia under DCMR Title 18 § 736, and federal FMCSA rules bar them in commercial vehicles over 10,000 lb GVWR in every state. No manufacturer in this category publishes a detection range in any unit, so the comparable specifications are antenna count, directional arrows and false-alert filtering.

Nobody publishes a range
This is the defining fact of the category and it is remarkable once you notice it.
Every radar detector is sold on detection distance. Uniden describes the R7 as an "extreme long-range" detector. ESCORT states the Redline 360c detects "2X farther than previous models". Neither publishes a figure — not in miles, not in feet, not under any stated test condition.
ESCORT's claim is at least a comparison, but it is a comparison against ESCORT's own older hardware rather than an absolute. There is no equivalent of the ISO standard that cabin filters cite, or the ANSI figure a tire gauge publishes. The number that decides the purchase does not exist in published form.
So this page ranks on what is published, which turns out to be the more useful thing anyway.
False alerts are the real problem
A detector that alerts constantly gets switched off within a week, and then it is a piece of plastic on your windshield.
Modern cars are the cause. Blind spot monitoring systems use radar in the same K band that police radar uses, so every car that passes you can trigger an alert. Automatic supermarket doors do the same. A cheap detector in modern traffic is close to unusable.

Filtering is the feature that determines whether you still have the detector powered on in six months, and it is published on both units here.
Two antennas, and why direction matters
Both detectors here use two antennas, one facing forward and one facing rearward, which is what makes directional arrows possible.
A single-antenna detector tells you there is a signal. A dual-antenna detector tells you whether it is ahead of you, behind you or alongside. That is the difference between information and noise: a signal from behind that is falling away is a car that passed you, and a signal ahead that is strengthening is something else entirely.

What a detector cannot do
Worth being blunt, because the category's marketing implies otherwise.
- It cannot help against instant-on radar used well. An officer who keeps the gun off until a target is in range gives a detector nothing to detect until you are already the target
- It cannot help against a fixed speed camera you have not already mapped. Camera databases help; the radar receiver does not
- It cannot help against pacing or aircraft. Neither emits anything
- It cannot help against lidar in practice. A laser gun is a narrow beam aimed at one vehicle, and by the time your detector reports it, you have been measured
What a detector genuinely does is make you aware of enforcement activity on an unfamiliar road, and reduce the chance of an inattentive drift over the limit. That is worth something. It is not what the packaging promises.
One thing that is never legal
Radar jammers — devices that transmit to interfere with a speed measurement — are a different product from a detector and are illegal everywhere in the US under federal communications law. A detector is a passive receiver; a jammer transmits.
This distinction matters because the two get sold in adjacent listings and the words get used interchangeably. If a product claims to prevent your speed being measured rather than to report that measuring is happening, it is the other category.
Where it goes, and what it costs you
A detector wants a clear view forward and rearward, which means high on the windshield behind the mirror — the same real estate a dash cam wants.
On most cars there is room for both if the dash cam goes tight against the mirror and the detector sits beside it. The honest alternative
If you are buying a detector because you want to avoid an expensive morning, it is worth comparing against what a dash cam does for similar money.
A detector helps in one narrow situation and is illegal in two US jurisdictions. A dash cam produces evidence in the situation that actually costs drivers money — a disputed collision where the other party's account differs from yours — and it is legal everywhere, records every trip, and needs no attention once installed.

Vantrue publishes an operating range of -20 C to 70 C on this camera, which is the highest ceiling of anything here and 10 C above what the same company publishes for its own 4K model. It is a supercapacitor camera with GPS and a 2.7K sensor at a two-figure list price, which is an unusual combination, and it is the pick if your car sits in a sun-baked lot all day.
