The short answer
Keep it inside, keep it dim, and avoid red and blue. Red and blue are reserved for emergency vehicles in all 50 states, and most states prohibit flashing or strobing lights on non-emergency vehicles — rules that apply to interior lighting too if it is visible from outside. Interior accent lighting is generally permitted where it is not visible externally. Nothing in this category publishes a current draw, which matters on a 12V socket that may be live with the ignition off.

RGBIC is the one technical distinction
Most of the specifications in this category are color counts, which are meaningless — every product claims sixteen million and none of them can show you more than one at a time unless it is addressable.
RGB means the whole strip is one color at once. RGBIC means the strip is divided into independently controlled segments, so it can show a gradient or a moving effect along its length.
That is the difference that determines whether the effects in the app look like the advertising. Everything else — brightness levels, music reactivity, app design — is comparable across the category.

The unpublished number, and why it matters here
No maker in this category publishes a current draw or wattage figure. On a device permanently plugged into a 12V socket, that is a real omission and it has two consequences.
The parasitic drain question. Many cars keep the accessory socket live with the ignition off. A light strip left switched on in a parked car draws until the battery is flat, and without a published figure you cannot estimate how long that takes.
The shared-fuse question. Your car's accessory circuit is typically fused at 10 to 20A total, shared across sockets. Lighting is a small load, but it is one more thing on a circuit that also has a phone charger and possibly a dash cam — best 12V socket splitters has the arithmetic.
Practical answer: check whether your socket dies with the ignition. If it does not, unplug the lights when you park, or fit them to a socket that does.
Brightness is a driving decision
This is the part that gets treated as aesthetic and is not.
Your eyes adapt to the brightest thing in view. Bright cabin lighting at night raises your adaptation level, which reduces how well you see into unlit areas outside the car — the pedestrian at the edge of the headlight beam, the unlit cyclist, the animal at the verge.
- Run it at the lowest brightness that achieves the look. These strips are far brighter than a cabin needs
- Keep it out of your direct line of sight — footwells and under the dash edge rather than across the dash top
- Nothing on the dash top facing the windshield. A glossy dash already reflects into a raked windshield; adding a light source to it puts a bright reflection directly in your view of the road
- Switch music-reactive modes off while driving. Movement in peripheral vision is exactly what the eye is built to notice

Fitting strips that stay fitted
Adhesive under a dashboard in summer is the failure everyone experiences.
- Clean with isopropyl alcohol first, not an interior detailer. Detailers leave a dressing that adhesive cannot grip
- Fit in warm conditions and press firmly for thirty seconds per section. Adhesive needs pressure and temperature to bond
- Route wires away from pedals and airbag paths. A wire in the footwell is a snag hazard, and anything across an airbag seam is a projectile
- Use the supplied clips at direction changes. Adhesive holds on a flat run and peels at a corner
- Expect to re-fit some sections. A parked car reaches roughly 60-70 C inside in summer and adhesive softens
The lighting that is actually useful
Accent lighting is decorative and there is nothing wrong with that. But if the underlying complaint is that you cannot see things in the car, two other purchases solve it better.

Skip this one. Same technology, pointed outward, and that is where lighting law actually bites. Exterior lights visible from the front are generally required to be amber or white, most states prohibit flashing or strobing on non-emergency vehicles, and red and blue are reserved for emergency vehicles in all 50 states. It is also a permanent wiring job rather than a plug-in. Interior accent lighting is the version with room to be creative.
