Microphone position is the product

Every hands-free option in a car does the same electronic job: receive audio over Bluetooth, play it, capture your voice, send it back. What differs is where the microphone sits, and that difference dominates everything else.

A visor unit puts the mic perhaps two feet from your mouth, above and ahead of you, away from the floor. An aux adapter or a 12V-socket kit puts it in the center console — low, behind you, next to the blower vents, surrounded by road noise reflecting off hard surfaces.

Sound pressure falls off with distance, so a mic twice as far away receives your voice considerably quieter while receiving the same road noise. That is the entire reason a visor unit sounds better to the person you are calling, and no amount of processing fully compensates for it.

20 dB of noise reduction is a real, comparable figure. Decibels are logarithmic, so 20 dB is a substantial reduction in the background the far end hears rather than a marginal one. Almost nothing in car audio accessories publishes a noise figure at all.

The 30 day standby matters more than the talk time for most people, because a visor unit spends most of its life idle waiting for a call rather than in use.

Bluetooth 3.0, and whether it matters

The Jabra's radio is old. Bluetooth 3.0 predates the low-energy improvements and the connection reliability work in later versions, and it shows in two places: pairing takes longer, and reconnection when you get in the car is slower than a modern device.

For call audio quality it matters less than you would think, because hands-free calling uses a narrowband voice profile that has not changed much and is not bandwidth-limited by the radio version.

Where it does cost you is music. If you plan to stream audio through it, an older radio plus a small speaker is a poor combination — and that is not what this product is for. For music, use the car's own system via an aux adapter or FM transmitter.

Nothing stops you using two. A visor unit for calls and an aux receiver for music is a genuinely sensible combination, since each does the job it is good at — the phone routes calls to one and media to the other automatically on most setups.

Fitting it, and the visor problem

It clips to the sun visor, which introduces one issue nobody mentions in listings: the visor moves. Flip it down against glare and the speakerphone comes with it, changing the microphone position and pointing the speaker at the windshield.

In practice most people clip it to the driver's visor and accept that. The alternative is the passenger visor, which keeps it out of the way at the cost of a slightly worse mic position.

Two other practical notes. It is on a visor in direct sun, and Jabra publishes no operating temperature range for it — a device that lives at the top of the cabin behind glass with no stated ceiling is an unknown. And it is a battery device that has to be charged; a flat one is silent, and it will be flat when you have not used it for a month.

Who this is for

Buy one if you take calls in the car regularly, your car has no factory hands-free, and you care about how you sound to the other person. That is a narrow brief and it is one this product genuinely serves better than the alternatives.

Do not buy one for music. Do not buy one if your car already has Bluetooth calling built in, which will use a microphone properly positioned in the headliner and beat a visor unit. Does a visor speakerphone sound better than an aux adapter?

To the person you are calling, yes — the microphone is near your mouth rather than in the console. To you it sounds worse, since it drives a small speaker instead of your car's audio system.

Can I play music through a visor speakerphone?

You can and it is not what it is for. A small single speaker with an older Bluetooth radio is a poor music path. Use an aux adapter or FM transmitter for media and the visor unit for calls.

Is Bluetooth 3.0 a problem?
